Travel South In Florida for a Florida Key Vacation & Island Paradise!
A Florida Key vacation will provide you with a unique island experience.
This is the section of Florida that has been popular with the rich & famous and inspired songs from those of Jimmy Buffett and The Beach Boys (The Real World was shot here).
From fishing, to snorkeling, to scuba, to boating, and more, The Keys are a neat place to find all sorts of vacation fun, interesting people, and all the beauty of a great Florida vacation spot.
We have already done an entire spot on Key West Fl so what you'll find here are the Florida Keys located in the middle and upper section of this amazing strip of islands.
We'll start North on highway 1 and travel down through the Upper Keys which include, Islamorada and Key Largo (do check out Key Largo diving if you are down there) and on down to the Middle Keys where you'll find Marathon, Big Pine, and others.
So, let's quit wasting time and find your perfect Florida Key vacation.
Upper Florida Keys
As you travel south you will leave the mainland of Florida and enter a neat driving situation on Highway 1 which will take you on an adventure of bridges, scenery, and a one lane road.
One day we decided to head to Key West from the Miami Florida beaches in our convertible for a day trip. The drive was amazing, the sun was shining, and we enjoyed every moment.
The four main spots in the Upper Keys are Key Largo, Islamorada, Tavernier, and Long Key. We are going to discuss the first two as they are our favorites.

There are a number of places to stay for your Florida Key vacation in Key Largo. We recommend searching around for a neat little bed and breakfast or small home/cottage to rent for the trip, but if that fails, then try a few of these hotels or resorts... - Rock Reef Resort- wake up to the bay and see the dolphins and manatees saying hello
- Holiday Inn- you can't seem to go wrong with a Holiday Inn. At least you'll know what you're getting
- Bayside Resort- not stayed here, but seems to be given good reviews for value
- Dove Creek Lodge- a newer spot that is a great little find. 5-stars across the board
- We have also heard that Azul Del Mar is a great getaway for your Florida Key vacation
You can also choose to camp at one of the four campgrounds, find an apartment/condo, or a tiny resort. Key Largo is a great spot for your relaxing vacation. If you're going to Key Largo be sure to check out Key Largo diving adventures!
Islamorada is our next Florida Key vacation stop. If you plan on making your bed here for your trip, there are two spots we recommend looking into:
Islander Resort and The Moorings offer quaint accommodations, great location to the island, friendly staff, and excellent bargain.
That sums up places to stay in the Upper Keys for your Florida Keys vacations. We are going to drive further south to the Middle Keys to find out what's going on there.
The neat thing is, you don't have to stay in just one location. The drive to each area of The Keys is very easy and convenient.
Once we find you a place to stay we'll see if we can find a few things to do and good eats.
Middle Florida Keys
We are going to make our next stop in Marathon. We found nothing but quality lodgings in Marathon and know you will be comfortable with any of these choices.
The number one spot has to be The Hammocks. If you are looking to lounge around and enjoy the islands, then this is the place to stay in Marathon.
The Seascape Ocean Resort is a beautiful spot right on the ocean. Probably one of the nicer places to stay in The Florida Keys, so make sure you book early because this 9-room joint is quite popular.
There is also the Key RV Park for you motorists. This place was very clean and well taken care of. Take your RV, your tents, your boat, and back right up to the ocean.

Things to do & Places to Eat
Scuba diving in Florida, snorkeling, Florida fishing vacations, boating, and lounging are the key activities when you take a Florida Key vacation.
You can take a drive down the infamous 7-mile bridge in Marathon, hit up the Dive Center for some awesome Key Largo diving, or take in the Florida beaches wildlife by swimming with dolphins, snorkeling off the shores, visiting any of the bird sanctuaries, or Florida state parks (be sure to visit John Pennekamp).
If you have a boat or are able to rent one, we highly suggest it. The beaches are great, but the crystal clear water is a little further out (at least from our experiences). Do some sailing or water skiing and have fun on the open ocean.
If you are wanting good food, then we can recommend a few spots that you'll enjoy for your Florida Key vacation.
In Islamadora, we would stop by Morada Bay and the Island Fish Company. If you are in Marathon, then try the food at the Hurricane Grill or Barracuda Grill. Finally, when you stay in Key Largo, Alabama Jack's and the Flamingo Bar & Grill are excellent choices.
All in all, the Florida Keys are a great island getaway. Don't expect huge excitement or major attractions. If you are looking for more activity, we suggest you try Key West or somewhere else in Florida.
