I stayed at the Saralago Hotel in Kissimmee. It was a very nice place and I was able to get a 2-room suite with refrigerator and microwave for a reasonable rate. Nothing fancy, but I would add it to the best 10 Orlando hotels list.
They offered free shuttle to Disney, which was a plus. This hotel is classified as a 3 star motel and that is was it was. No special features but if you are looking for a nice place to stay without all the bells and whistles then I would suggest the Saralago.
They have 2 pools and a hot tub the pool is open until 12 am, which is extremely nice after walking around the park all day. The only down fall is that the last pick up time for the shuttle is at 10pm which will cause you to miss the fireworks.
If you want to see the fireworks I would suggest renting a car or staying on Disney. My suggestion would to go with your instincts. Good advice on that last sentence.

Bonnet Creek Resort is probably the nicest overall. They have some pretty good deals on eBay. It's a timeshare and you can rent from owners (cheaper than booking directly).
It's not Disney owned, but it's right by another Disney resort and close to Downtown Disney and Epcot. You don't get some of the perks of a Disney resort, but for the money and the amount of room you get, it's a great deal.
Swan/Dolphin is also very nice and it's right next to (walking distance) to Epcot and the Boardwalk. You can take a boat to MGM. They are a Westin Resort, but offer Disney bus transportation and a few of the other Disney resort perks. You can get a good government/teacher/nurse/military discount. They also occasionally have special prices of around $150-160.
If that's too pricey and you want to stay at a Disney-owned resort, try Port Orleans or Pop Century.
Royal Pacific Resort is right next to Universal Studio and is a fabulous resort, but it's super pricey. We could spend all day at the pool there. Worth it if your kids love to swim.
Nickelodeon Studios is absolutely the best of both worlds. They do their own shows have wonderful rooms and great pools and arcades for the kids. They also offer free shuttle services to Disney, Universal, Sea World, etc…

It all depends on how much you want to spend...
any of the Disney Resorts are very nice but are pretty expensive. If you want to stay in the park but not as expensive as the deluxe resorts then I'd suggest Grosvenor Resort. We stayed here and it was pretty nice and not super expensive, its also right next to downtown Disney so you can just walk right down whenever you want.
It also has transportation (bus) to all parks every 15 min. Disney characters at breakfast, a mystery dinner theater, bar, pool, etc. It was a great place to stay without being too expensive.
We also stayed at Fort Wilderness Resort, which is more of a camp-like feel. If you want really cheap then I'd stay in Kissimmee, just outside Disney. That is two votes for Kissimmee. I have heard that many times that you’ll save a bundle staying outside of Disney.

Well, all Disney Hotels are great (it's tough to pick the best 10 Orlando hotels in my opinion), especially The Bordwalk Inn.
Country Inn and Suites is right off of International Blvd on the North side towards outlet mall. They have great prices, great rooms, just off the beatin path, but right in the middle of it all.
Tip: Int’l Drive has a number of good hotels at great rates that would be perfect for your Florida vacation.
Sea World on the back road is only 3-4 miles south of this hotel. There are other hotels of course that cost more. The Castle on International Blvd is also very cool, just south of Sand Lake on International. Sand Lake also will take you right over to MCO airport.
To round out the best 10 Orlando hotels we must discuss the best of 3 Universal Studios Hotels.
I recommend the Hard Rock Hotel. Portofino Bay is nice but nothing beats the Hard Rock. It's right there next to it all! Very cool, right where City Walk is and Universal Studios. Close to shopping and other things to do.
The rooms are very nice and clean and they tend to have great views of the city. Also, if you are into music they get groups in from all over the US to play there.
I remember last year we had some guests down from New Jersey and we stayed with them at the Hard Rock, and one of the nights that we were staying there, there was some music group that were popular up in New Jersey and they got to go hear them play, so they really enjoyed their stay!!
