Amelia Island Florida is one of those beaches that you don't initially think about when planning your trip to Florida, but you have to take this fabulous beach on the Atlantic Coast seriously because it offers so much in the way of a "perfect Florida vacation".

Being in the northern part of Florida's east coast (35 miles northeast of Jacksonville) it is something to consider when picking the time of year to visit. However, the gorgeous beaches, monstrous sand dunes, an interesting and unique atomsphere, delicious restaurants, and a range of excellent places to stay, Amelia Island may be the hidden destination you've been searching for.

One of the things you will want to do is pick a day, grab a map, and get lost touring the historic districts of the island. Offering an amazing past, start your tour at Centre Street and work your way around engulfing the town's history.

You may also want to spend a couple of hours venturing to Fort Clinch State Park. As one of America's great state parks, you history buffs and all around nature lovers will enjoy your time here.

If you really want to have some fun hit up Main Beach which offers 13 miles of white, sandy beaches where you can even rent a horse and ride like the wind blows.

Food on Amelia Island Florida!

Salt appears to be one of the most well-respected spots around the area. In fact, Fodors, the great travel directory company, chooses this place as a wonderful menu, unbelievable view of the Atlantic, and an experience that is well worth the price (note: pricey it may be, but budget for it as it is worth it).

Another specialty restaurant to eat at would be Beech Street Grill. You are in for a treat and it's not just the food. Enjoy the atmosphere, innovative food, and a wine selection that will have you drooling. Great for that special night out.

There are a ton of fabulous restaurants to enjoy each morning, noon, and night. Our recommendation is to get some local referrals to fit your taste buds.

Where to Stay

Your choices range from world class hotels, to individually owned condos and homes, to resorts that will blow your socks off.

There are three places that if the budget fits we have been told are fabulous:

• The Ritz Carlton. With this chain elegance, superb comfort, and wonderful service have become the staple to it's visitors. You may spend a few dollars more, but the ocean views are spectacular, accomodations are outstanding, and you do have some choices based on your budget.

• Amelia Island Plantation. Offering first rate golf, tennis, and spa facilities, we have personally never heard a bad thing about this resort. Very family friendly, amazing ocean view stays, a variety of outdoor activities, and too much to list make this a top choice.

• A century-old B&B, the Hoyt House is an old-style Victorian that will make for a cozy vacation. Having that antique flair and great for a two-plus day getaway you'll receive gourmet breakfasts, a pool and hot tub, and close proximity to the historic district.
